Combatting period poverty

Handing out period pants

Children start school later in Kenya so primary school children are aged up to 12 or 13. At the start of the new term Janet was able to hand out new period pants to the older girls thanks to the generosity of BMJ donors. There are so many benefits:

A dignified solution: Period pants are washable and reusable for a couple of years. Girls often resort to using rags as pads are so expensive, so pants aid families with limited resources. They look and feel like standard underwear.

More days in school: Many schoolgirls face "shame" or embarrassment from leaks, often leading to missed school days. Period pants provide better leakage protection, allowing girls to focus on their studies without fear of staining their precious and expensive uniforms.

BE MORE JOSIE is transforming lives. It costs £300 per year to provide period pants to the older girls.
